Our Innovative Approach
Mary’s Meadow at Providence Place is the first facility in the state to provide high-quality long-term nursing care and short-term rehabilitation in a small-house design purposely designed to look and feel like a real home.
This innovative approach makes a real difference to our residents. Here’s why:
A social model versus a medical model of care
While our residents may have health conditions that require a certain level of medical care, our focus is on the whole person – not solely on physical symptoms.
It starts with the design of Mary’s Meadow: Each resident has a private bedroom and bath, but there are graciously appointed common areas for socializing and engaging with others.
Importantly, we empower our residents to take charge of decision-making about everyday activities; there are no rigid schedules to which everyone must adhere. We encourage individuals to participate in their own care plan meetings, and to remain as independent and self-sufficient as they’re able.
Elder Assistants
Elder Assistants are an entirely new type of staff unique to Mary’s Meadow. They Certified Nursing Assistants with additional specialized training, their primary role is to help each resident direct his or her own care.
The Elder Assistant puts the residents she or he cares for at the center of all decision making, and assists them with meal planning, cooking, laundry, personal care and other activities as requested.
It’s an approach that gives residents an enhanced sense of security, empowerment and autonomy – rare in a nursing home setting.
The Sisters of Providence difference
The Sisters of Providence are pioneers in healthcare and social services, delivered with an exceptional level of compassion and respect for the dignity of the individual. From their arrival to Holyoke in 1873, the Sisters have cared for the community. Mary’s Meadow is one of the latest examples of this commitment.
