Our department has earned MRI ACR Accreditation, considered to be the gold standard of medical imaging. What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is a noninvasive imaging technique that does not require exposure to radiation. MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequencies to image the internal organs, soft tissues, brain and spinal cord. As the human body is made up of about 75% water, an MRI uses the water’s hydrogen atoms and computers to produce very detailed images.
What are some common reasons for an MRI?
- Breast imaging and procedures
- Surgical planning
- Biopsies and minimally invasive procedures
- Spinal problems
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Cancers
- Tumors
- Heart conditions
- Injuries to bones or organs
Do you have claustrophobia?
Our facility has a wide-bore 3 Tesla MRI. This is ideal for claustrophobic patients. Many specialists prefer a high-field MRI (3T). Not only does this type of machine give patients more space, it provides the highest quality of images and patient experience.
Some patients may require a mild sedative prior to their exam. Please consult with your referring physician to discuss your options. If you are pre-medicated, you will need someone to drive you home.
Do you have metal implants or devices?
In most cases an MRI is safe for patients with metal implants. However, it is important to notify your physician and your MRI technologist of ALL implants prior to your scheduled appointment. Including, but not limited to the following:
- Pacemakers, implanted cardiac devices or stents
- Clips, often used for brain aneurysms
- Metal coils
- Surgical hardware
How should I prepare for my MRI?
- An MRI safety screening questionnaire must be completed by all patients prior to their appointment. Ask an associate about completing your form today at (860) 714-5850.
- Always bring a copy of your insurance card, implant documentation and a photo I.D. to your appointment.
- Women should always inform their doctor and MRI technologist if there is a possibility of pregnancy.
- You may be asked to fast depending on the exam.
- On the day of your exam, leave all jewelry and other accessories at home or remove them prior to your MRI. These items include:
- Jewelry, watches, credit cards and hearing aids
- Pins, hairpins, metal zippers and similar metallic items
- Removable dental work
- Pens and eyeglasses
- Body piercings
What should I expect during my exam?
- During an MRI, you will be asked to lie still on a table for the duration of your scan. The MRI technologist will assist you onto the table into the appropriate position. During some tests you receive contrast through an IV which makes parts of your body show up better in the image.
- Before your exam, you should inform the technologist of any allergies.
- You will be alone in the room while you are being scanned. Your technologist can always see, hear and speak to you.
When do I get my test results?
Our staff is happy to answer any questions you may have regarding following up with your physician to obtain your MRI results.
Although we cannot give you immediate results, some providers will arrange for you to come directly to their office after your scan. Please contact your physician’s office to discuss your results as your doctor is your greatest advocate!
