What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound testing also known as sonography uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the organs and vessels inside your body. The test is done by moving a device called a transducer over a part of the body. The transducer sends out sound waves, which bounce off the tissues inside your body and bounce back to create the images. It’s commonly used to view organs like the breast, bladder, kidneys, scrotum, thyroid and can be used to assess blood flow for a blockage.

What are some common reasons for an ultrasound?

  • Breast imaging and procedures
  • Thyroid disease
  • Abdominal pain
  • Cancers
  • Tumors
  • DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Kidney disease
  • *Liver disease

(Our facility offers state-of-the-art Liver Elastography. This is a very specialized exam, if you have known liver disease, please talk with your referring physician about your testing needs. A physician’s order is required.)*

How should I prepare for my ultrasound?

  • Always bring a copy of your insurance card and a photo I.D. to your appointment.
  • You may be asked to fast depending on the exam.
  • On the day of your exam, an ultrasound technologist may ask you to remove clothing or other objects that may interfere with the procedure. If you are asked to remove clothing, you will be given a gown to wear.

What should I expect during my exam?

  • A technologist will position you on an exam table and apply a clear gel to the area being examined.
  • The technologist will firmly press the transducer against the skin and move it back and forth in the area of interest.
  • Most ultrasounds are painless though you may experience slight discomfort from a cold gel or pressure in an already painful location.
