What is Computed Tomography?

Computed tomography, or CT, is a special x-ray that uses a scanner and computer to show cross-sectional pictures of structures inside the body, including those in the chest, abdomen, pelvis, arm or leg, as well as organs like the liver, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, lungs, and heart. It also can be used to study blood vessels, bones and the spinal cord.

What are some common reasons for a CT scan?

  • Injuries to bones or organs
  • Heart disease or screening
  • Surgical planning
  • Biopsies and minimally invasive procedures
  • Spinal problems
  • Evaluation of blood vessels
  • Tumors
  • Cancers
  • *Lung screening

(If you are a smoker or have been in the past, you may qualify for a CT Low-Dose Lung Screening. Early detection is key, talk to your doctor today! A physician’s order is required)*

How should I prepare for my CT scan?

  • Always bring a copy of your insurance card and a photo I.D. to your appointment.
  • Women should always inform their doctor and CT technologist if there is a possibility of pregnancy.
  • You may be asked to fast depending on the exam.
  • On the day of your exam, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

What should I expect during my exam?

  • During a CT scan, you lie still on a table. The table slowly passes through the center of a large X-ray machine. The test is painless. During some tests you receive contrast through an IV which makes parts of your body show up better in the image.
  • You may be asked to drink an oral contrast prior to your exam.
  • Before your exam, you should inform the technologist of any allergies.
  • You will be alone in the room while you are being scanned. Your technologist can always see, hear and speak to you.
