Program Requirements: Saint Mary’s Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program requires that all residents complete a scholarly assignment during residency training. Residents are provided education in the fundamental principles involved in scholarship and research. Our residents are encouraged to participate in posters and oral presentations, both locally and nationally. The scholarly projects promoted are case reports, literature reviews, curriculum development, and research projects. Research related opportunities include clinical research, quality improvement related activities, and didactics. In the past years, locally conducted research has significantly expanded. Still, the opportunity for participation in all forms of research is partially due to the unique relationship between Yale University and Saint Mary’s Hospital. To support efforts directed in developing a strong research project, residents may request a “Research Elective” block during their PGY-2 or PGY-3 years.

Finkelstein Scholarship: To encourage residents’ scholarly work, a $1000 scholarship is awarded to a house officer who has demonstrated the most commitment to scholarship and quality improvement during the intern and PGY-2 years of their residency.
