Patients with heart failure can experience a variety of symptoms that may appear suddenly or develop slowly over time. Some common heart failure symptoms include:

  • An irregular or elevated heart rate
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath when lying flat or with minimal activity
  • Build-up of fluid, such as swelling in the legs, feet, ankles or abdomen
  • Feeling tired
  • Rapid weight gain (due to fluid build-up)
  • Nausea or poor appetite
  • Chest pain
