Our team of board-certified doctors and experienced staff are here to help you navigate every stage of this exciting journey, from preconception through birth. We invite you to schedule a tour of the Women and Infants’ Center by calling (203) 709-6184

    • Private birthing suites with Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, private bathroom and shower
    • Overnight accommodations for your partner or support person during labor, birth and after delivery
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Certified nursing staff and providers
    • Excellent nurse/patient ratio
    • Skin to skin after delivery - Your baby will be placed on your chest where he will stay for at least the first hour after delivery. That first hour is known as the “golden hour,” a time for you and your partner to bond with your baby and it is during this time that most babies will have their first feeding. Your baby recognizes your heartbeat and that is a very comforting sound to him immediately after delivery and during the first few weeks of life. The more skin to skin you do with your baby the better he will breastfeed, as skin to skin raises the hormone levels necessary for making mature milk.
    • Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, if needed, 24 hours/day undefined

Treatments

    • Birthing balls, peanut ball, hydrotherapy
    • Anesthesiology and epidurals for pain management available 24 hours a day
    • Opioid-free caesarian births - In the event a cesarean section is necessary, we practice a state of the art opioid free caesarean section. An opioid free cesarean allows for faster recovery times and no need for narcotics at home while you are recovering. Speak with your doctor to see if this may be an option for you or if you would like more information.
    • Operating Rooms and Recovery - right on unit, so you're never more than steps away from your baby
    • Lactation Support during labor to answer questions and after delivery to assist with first feeding

Perinatology & High Risk Pregnancy

During your pregnancy, your obstetrician may recommend special care, including a more detailed ultrasound, for a variety of reasons. Pre-pregnancy or perinatal diabetes (gestational diabetes), recurrent miscarriage, pre-term labor and other conditions may require a consultation from a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, or perinatologist, an obstetrician who has completed specialized training in the management of high-risk pregnancies.

The Perinatology Program at Saint Mary’s Hospital combines advanced ultrasound technology with 4-D capability and the expertise of specialists in maternal-fetal medicine from Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford.

Level II ultrasounds will soon be performed in the Women and Infants Center at Saint Mary’s Hospital. This service offers you access to a higher level of maternity care without having to leave your community.

The Little Extras

The birth of a new baby is a joyous celebration. Below are some ways Saint Mary's Hospital celebrates every baby and the new family:

    • Meals for Father or Support Person
    • Lullaby played throughout hospital when baby is born to announce to the entire Saint Mary’s Family your baby’s entrance into the world
Going Home

The hospital stay for an uncomplicated vaginal delivery is typically 24-48 hours. For patients who deliver via cesarean section, the hospital stay is usually between 3-4 days.
