PGY2 Pharmacy Program
PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification if available.
Background
Our organization has more than 15 years of experience incorporating pharmacists in a variety of Ambulatory Services. Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center offers more than twenty clinics, including primary care and a variety of specialty clinics dedicated to serving the underserved populations of Greater Hartford.
Our program was the first ASHP-accredited PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program in Ambulatory Care in the state of Connecticut. Our goal is to address the individual needs and interests of our residents while adhering to the principles and philosophies described in the ASHP Accreditation Standard for Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency Program.
PGY2 Ambulatory Care pharmacy residents have the opportunity to practice at the top of their license, managing a wide spectrum of disease states. Rotation structures vary from an interdisciplinary team approach to independent medication management under collaborative drug therapy management agreements. A single electronic health record is utilized throughout the inpatient and outpatient areas, providing increased access for Ambulatory providers.
Upon completion of the Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program, residents will:
- Obtain Teaching and Learning Program Certification through the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy (if not obtained during PGY1 residency)
- Be prepared to serve as a pharmacy residency preceptor or an adjunct faculty preceptor for IPPE and APPE pharmacy students
- Be prepared to obtain board certification in ambulatory care
- Acquire the skills needed to implement ambulatory services into new areas of practice
Learning Experiences
The resident will complete a minimum of 12 months of experience, including an orientation block, required longitudinal rotations, and elective three-month block rotations. Each resident will complete a major project and present posters at regional and national pharmacy conferences.

Professional Meetings and Conferences
At a minimum, residents will attend the Annual Greg Gousse Residency Conference and present at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors (as applicable) and consistent with Health System Policy.
Application Process
The Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency Program participates in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program and requires each applicant to follow the requirements of the Matching Program.
