Cardiac Surgery and Procedures

Coronary artery disease is a serious condition that affects many people. The coronary arteries supply vital oxygen and nutrients to the heart. If a blockage develops in one of the arteries, patients may require coronary artery bypass surgery to correct it. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is open heart surgery that restores the blood supply to the heart by creating bypasses, or detours, around the blocked artery or arteries.

Preparation for Surgery

Patients and families will receive a cardiac surgery handbook as an important resource to learn about preparation and recovery from surgery. A detailed open heart surgery educational program will also be provided by a registered nurse before surgery.

CABG surgery is performed in a state-of-the-art operating room under general anesthesia. The surgeon will open the chest through an incision in the breastbone. The surgeon will use a vein found in the calf (saphenous vein), or an artery from under the chest wall (mammary artery) or forearm (radial artery) to create a bypass around the blocked artery or arteries. Following the surgery, patients are monitored in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and then cardiac step-down unit through hospital discharge.
