Lung Cancer Care: Why Choose Trinity Health Of New England?

At Trinity Health Of New England, it is possible to resume your everyday life after a lung cancer diagnosis. We deliver focused treatments that are on par with many of the nation’s top cancer programs. And our attention to your unique needs helps you achieve the best possible results.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Early detection: Our nationally recognized lung cancer screening program helps us catch the early signs of cancer. If we detect noncancerous growths (lung nodules), you receive regular monitoring. Our careful attention to changes in lung tissue help us catch lung cancer early when it’s easier to treat.

  • Accurate diagnosis: We use a variety of minimally invasive techniques, including endobronchial ultrasound to take lung tissue samples without surgery. Pathologists specializing in lung cancer examine the tissue samples under a microscope to confirm cancer with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Expertise: Trinity Health Of New England is home to highly skilled thoracic surgeons who use the best available techniques to remove cancer. If you need chemotherapy, you may receive care from medical oncologists specializing in lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Treatment Planning

If you are showing signs of lung cancer, we use additional testing to evaluate the size and location of the cancer. These tests help us coordinate the treatments that are best for your needs.

Sophisticated tests we offer include:

  • Bronchoscopy: We slide a thin tube (bronchoscope) down your throat to evaluate tissue inside the airways and lungs.
  • Endobronchial ultrasound: We use a bronchoscope with an ultrasound scanner at the tip. The scanner provides real-time imaging of lung tissue, even in hard-to-reach areas.
  • Mediastinoscopy: This surgical procedure enables us to examine the space behind the breastbone. We slide a bronchoscope through a small incision in your chest to collect tissue or fluids.

Lung Cancer Treatments Available at Trinity Health Of New England

We develop a personalized care plan that may include:

  • Surgery: We use technologies such as video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) to remove cancer through tiny incisions. Some patients have robotic surgery, which combines tiny incisions and robotic technology to remove cancer with a high degree of precision. These techniques help you experience less pain after surgery and a faster recovery.

  • Radiation Therapy: This treatment uses beams of radiation to destroy cancer cells. We offer the best available techniques for people who can’t have traditional surgery. One of those is CyberKnife® radiosurgery. We are the only health system in Connecticut to offer this advanced radiation therapy. Other options include stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), which uses stronger doses of radiation for effective care in fewer sessions.
