Saint Francis Hospital provides a comprehensive array of world class orthopedic services, including general orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, spine care, sports medicine, hand surgery, foot and ankle surgery, and trauma care. Through our affiliate Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, we provide a broad range of outpatient and inpatient therapy to orthopedic patients.
Orthopedics at Saint Francis includes dedicated operating rooms and a specialized post-surgical nursing unit. We are the largest provider of orthopedic inpatient procedures in the region. Our inpatient service is complemented by a very active outpatient surgery program.

Utilizing the latest in imaging technology, Airo, the portable 32-slice CT scanner, has the potential to change daily life in the surgical space, offering mobility, flexibility and access to real-time patient images, aiding decision-making in the operating room. Verifying one’s work intraoperatively may reduce re-operation rates, decrease overall costs and lead to improved patient care. Intraoperative imaging can also offer patients the benefit of a less-invasive surgical procedure, reduced trauma, faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays.
Airo mobile CT enables more flexible patient positioning and helps expand the use of intraoperative imaging for a wide range of clinical applications, including cranial, spinal, ear/nose/throat (ENT), head and neck, cranio-maxillofacial (CMF), trauma and orthopedic surgery.
Fully integrated with Brainlab platform, Curve™ Image Guided Surgery, the system links up-to-the-minute intraoperative images with the spatial position of your doctor’s surgical instruments. Using Automatic Image Registration, Airo instantly sends the newly acquired intraoperative CT scan to the image guided surgery system without the need for manual registration that is often required for access to certain anatomy. This integration is an important time-saving feature for surgeons which allows for a higher level of accuracy, helping to make surgery more precise and safer for the patient.
Airo is designed for diagnostic imaging and intraoperative use. With no monitor cart and a tight turning radius, Airo easily fits through standard doors and elevators. It is moved from room to room by one user using a touchscreen pendant that controls transport, imaging and maintenance.
Saint Francis Hospital will use Airo Mobile Intraoperative CT as the new standard of care, potentially reducing the risk of repeat, or revision, surgery. With this technology surgeons can rely on intraoperative information to ensure that they have achieved the objective of the procedure, rather than wait for post-operative images to verify the results. Physicians are able to react intraoperatively to the surgical situation by verifying what has been done after each step, potentially correcting any imperfections during the procedure.
