What exercises should I be doing before surgery?
Refer to our patient handbook to familiarize yourself with exercises that you will be performing after your surgery.

What is Durable Medical Equipment (DME)?
DME is equipment that provides therapeutic benefits to you following a knee replacement surgery. The durable medical equipment that you may use include a cane and/or walker

How long will I have to use a walker or cane for?
This will depends on your progress, however, you can expect to require the use of either a cane or walker at least until your follow up appointment with your surgeon. 

When will I get up after surgery?
Most patients will be up and walking 3 to 4 hours after surgery. Walking is one of the best exercises to assist in your recovery from hip replacement surgery.

What kind of therapy/exercise program will I receive after leaving CJRI?
Your surgeon will customize your exercise program. Examples of your program may include; a walking and exercise regime detailed by your surgeon, outpatient therapy or physical therapy in your home. This plan will depend on your specific needs and progress. Your specific therapy plan will be explained to you. Before leaving CJRI.

Do I need a chair in the shower?
This is patient-specific and although not needed, some patients feel better about getting a shower chair prior to surgery. Please discuss with your therapist while at CJRI.

What exercise equipment do I need at home?
You do not need to purchase any additional exercise equipment in preparation for joint replacement surgery.

When can I start driving?
Generally speaking, you should be able to drive after 4 weeks after your surgery. You need to be off all narcotics.

When will I climb stairs?
You will learn to climb stairs while at CJRI. Based on you progress, your therapist will work with you to ensure you have a customized plan for returning home.

When can I swim?
Swimming is permitted once your incision is fully healed. Typically, you can swim around 4 weeks after your surgery. Please discuss with your surgeon.

Can I sleep on my side?
Sleep on whatever side you are comfortable with for you.

Do I need to bring in my walker/cane to CJRI?
If you have a cane or walker, please bring it to CJRI. Your therapist will ensure that it is sized correctly and meets your needs. If you do not have a cane or walker, we have an onsite vendor that will be able to work with you and your insurance to provide you with your necessary equipment. You can also purchase your equipment at any retail outlet.

What is a Hip Kit?
A Hip Kit consists of the tools needed to help you with your daily self-care following hip replacement surgery. The hip kit includes: a reacher, sock aid, long handle sponge, dressing stick and elastic shoe laces.

Do I bring my Hip Kit to CJRI?
Please bring your hip kit to CJRI. Your therapist will work with you on how to use the various aids. Hip kits are not covered under any insurance plans. You can purchase your kit on Amazon or at most medical supply companies.

If you are sitting on your toilet and your knees are at or above the level of your hips you should invest in a raised seat or commode.
