The Greater Hartford Family Advocacy Center (GHFAC) at Saint Francis Hospital is a safe place where children and adults who are suspected victims of sexual abuse, sexual assault, intimate partner, or community violence can get the support and treatment they need. The Goals of the Center are to:
- Minimize additional trauma to victims of crime
- Promote case coordination among professionals and agencies
- Increase community understanding and prevention of violence and abuse
- Provide direct services to promote healing and recovery from trauma
Forensic Interviews Children Ages 3-17
The GHFAC coordinates and conducts neutral, fact finding and developmentally sensitive interviews of children in response to suspicion of child sexual abuse and other forms of family violence. These video recorded interviews, conducted by experienced professionals in collaboration with investigators, are designed to elicit complete and accurate information while minimizing any additional trauma to child victims. Our goal is to ensure that the voices of children are heard and that children receive the appropriate services to support their healthy growth and development.
Forensic Experiential Trauma Interviews (FETI) Adults Ages 18 and Up:
FETI interviews are offered for any adult victims of crime, particularly adult victims of sexual assault and/or physical assault, domestic or community violence. FETI interviews are also successful with people who may have witnessed violence. Such interviews may be especially helpful for vulnerable populations such as those with developmental disabilities or mental illness who would be better served in a therapeutic environment. Conducted in collaboration with law enforcement, this methodology reduces the inaccuracy of the information provided during an interview and greatly enhances the understanding of the person’s traumatic or stressful experience.
Behavioral/Mental Health Services:
A team of trained mental health professionals provide a continuum of trauma informed therapeutic services to support victims of violence and their families. Following a comprehensive assessment, an individualized treatment plan is co-created and discussed with victims, their families, and existing providers involved with the family. Therapeutic services provided by the GHFAC are evidence-based and modified accordingly for cultural needs. Referrals for additional community services are made when appropriate.
