Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain and can make a person have convulsions, pass out, or move or behave strangely. Epilepsy is a condition in which people have recurrent seizures. There are many different types of seizures and are classified by where in the brain the epileptic activity starts. The right diagnosis is crucial for treatment of epilepsy and seizures. Electroencephalography (EEG) helps to detect abnormal electrical activity in the brain, and hence gives information about patients' seizures.

The Epilepsy clinic at Saint Francis Hospital is designed to provide comprehensive care to individuals with seizures or epilepsy. The clinic provides care to individuals with various types of seizures, passing out spells, unresponsive episodes, and comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic management of intractable epilepsy. Routine EEG as well ambulatory EEG studies are available.

The Epilepsy clinic is run by Dr. Kumar, a board-certified neurologist, with a special interest in Epilepsy. After completing a residency in Neurology from Rutgers University, NJ, Dr. Kumar pursued fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at Montefiore Medical Centre - Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NYC, followed by a second fellowship in Epilepsy at Emory University School of Medicine, focusing on Stereotactic EEG and epilepsy surgery planning. He currently serves as the Chief of Neurology as well as the Medical Director of the Epilepsy Center at Saint Francis Medical Center, Hartford.
