    • Life Star Helicopter Service: For nearly 30 years, Saint Mary’s has partnered with Life Star to care for trauma patients and those with urgent medical needs.
    • Level II Trauma Center: This designation reflects the quality care that Saint Mary’s provides in accordance with the standards established by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma.
    • Award-Winning Heart Care: Saint Mary’s has received the American Heart Association Mission Lifeline® award for meeting high standards of performance in the quick and appropriate treatment of heart attack patients.

Pediatric Emergency Care:

Saint Mary’s Emergency Department offers Emergency Pediatric Care, the only kind in the region. The unit boasts four highly trained emergency pediatric physicians who completed their residency and/or fellowship training at Connecticut Children’s. Physicians with Pediatric Emergency Medicine Residency and Fellowship training bring with them a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Because pediatric care is very different from adult care, very basic, yet important protocols specific to pediatric medicine have been implemented. Emergency Pediatric Care providers can treat and manage all levels of acuity from the simplest pediatric complaint to the most complex. Standards of care have been established specific to pediatric care from cases as common as ear infections to the most severe trauma cases.

The team works very closely with the Connecticut Children’s Pediatric Inpatient Unit located in Saint Mary’s on the 4th floor (Sacred Heart 4) and staffed by attending physicians, physician assistants, advance practice RNs, RNs and medical patient care assistants employed by Children’s. Saint Mary’s can admit patients to the Connecticut Children’s Pediatric Inpatient Unit at this location or stabilize and transfer them to the main Connecticut Children’s hospital in Hartford as needed. The unit also serves the surrounding Waterbury communities. The goal is always to keep patients and families close to home.
