PGY1 Pharmacy Program
Mercy Medical Center's PGY1 pharmacy residency program, accredited by ASHP, builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is intended to be a broad-based learning and practice experience. Upon completion, it is expected that the resident will be a confident and capable practitioner who will be able to function in a variety of practice settings. These settings include inpatient acute and ambulatory care as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team. The program is designed to be broad in scope to allow the resident to gain the skills necessary to function in these practice settings. The residency is also designed to enable the residents to develop strong communication skills that will allow them to educate other healthcare professionals, patients, and the community. The acquisition of these skills should also allow them to further enhance their knowledge through specialized training in a PGY2 residency or fellowship.

Required Longitudinal Learning Experiences
- Ambulatory Care (Aug-Dec ½ day/week in a Hypertension clinic; Jan-June 1 day/every other week in a Diabetes clinic)
- Pharmacy Service (Staffing; year-long)
- Research Project (year-long; December will serve as a research month)
- Drug Information (year-long)
- Medication Safety (5 months)
Three Elective Learning Experiences
- Internal Medicine II (4 weeks)
- Cardiac Care II (4 weeks)
- Critical Care II (4 weeks)
- Substance Abuse (4 weeks)
- Sterile Compounding & USP 797/800 (4 weeks)
- Academia (4 weeks)
Professional meetings: At a minimum residents will attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and the Eastern States Conference or applicable virtual events for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors. Opportunities to present locally and nationally will also be available to the residents.
Teaching Opportunities: Residents will work directly with IPPE and APPE students throughout the year and participate in didactic and/or laboratory activities at Western New England University and Health Sciences School of Pharmacy.
Benefits
- Compensation: The annual salary for a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Resident will be $47,000 per year.
- Vacation, Holidays, and Sick Time: The resident will accrue PTO at a rate of 5.538 hours every two weeks, resulting in 144 hours per year. All vacation and sick time are subtracted from this bank. In addition, there will be six core holidays and one floating holiday available to the resident.
- Health insurance (medical, dental and vision): Offered to the resident, group (couple & family) rates are available
- Short-term disability and incidental sick time: Income replacement up to 60% of base salary
- Long-term disability: Income replacement up to 60% of base salary
- Professional Funding: May be offered to residents each year as part of the budget process. Assistance is available to residents in the form of support for materials necessary to attend meetings (i.e., poster printing, business cards, etc.) and financially each resident is allocated up to $2500 per year
How to Apply
Mercy Medical Center PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program participates in the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program. Therefore, it requires each applicant to follow the requirements of the Matching Program.
The program is open for two positions with a start date of on or around July 1st, running for 12 months.
For the pharmacy residency program, the applicant must:
- Be licensed (or be eligible for licensure in Massachusetts and complete such no later than September 1st). Residents must minimally have a Commonwealth of Massachusetts intern license or be licensed as a Pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the start of residency. If an intern license is not obtained by the beginning of the residency, the resident will not be allowed to start and would forfeit the ability to continue.
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America (naturalized citizens must provide proof of naturalization)
Or
Hold a visa allowing for completion of your residency year (we cannot sponsor your visa)
- Have received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy
- Adhere to the rules of the Resident Matching Program (RMP), and
- Be a highly motivated pharmacist who desires advanced education and training to enhance professional pharmacy practice.
Application materials must include:
- An official transcript from the School of Pharmacy to PhORCAS
Complete the PhORCAS recommendation form from the following:- One from an employer
- One from academia/preceptor
- One of the applicant’s choosing
- Letter of intent, and
- Curriculum vitae
Applications must be received via PhORCAS (Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service) no later than the application deadline in PhORCAS to be considered for the residency program beginning on or around July 1. Applications must be complete and will not be accepted after the deadline.
