Your Stories: Saint Francis Offers Fall Prevention Program for Seniors
June 15, 2026Categories: Colleague Corner
Injuries from falls are the most common trauma seen at Saint Francis Hospital, from slips in the bathroom or kitchen to tripping over a pet or throw rug. Each year, about one third of adults ages 65 and older fall, and falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in this age group.
Pharmacist Micaela Powner taught residents at the Court of Saint James in West Hartford about how to mitigate the risk of falls when taking multiple medications.
A team from Saint Francis comprised of colleagues from the Trauma Department, Pharmacy and Physical and Occupational Therapy Department, offers a Fall Prevention Program designed to teach seniors how to make their homes safer, strengthen their muscles and be more cognizant of fall risks from their surroundings or medications.
The team brings the program to senior centers, adult living centers and assisted living facilities, where seniors are taught about fall risks and how to prevent falls from happening, along with simple chair exercises to help strengthen their arms and legs.
Recently, 20 residents from The Court of Saint James in West Hartford participated in the Fall Prevention Program to learn valuable tips to stay safe.
