At Saint Mary’s Hospital, the celebration took place on Tuesday, April 1, in the Conference Center Building. Attendees, including physicians, residents, and advanced practice providers, enjoyed a hot meal while taking time to connect with colleagues. For those on the go, grab-and-go sandwiches were available. Adding a touch of fun to the event, providers had the chance to test their basketball skills with a round of Pop-A-Shot.
Meanwhile, in Hartford, Saint Francis Hospital hosted a buffet-style luncheon on the same day, featuring festive Doctors’ Day decorations. At Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, providers were treated to a special lunch offering on Wednesday, April 2. Hartford Market leaders joined both celebrations, taking time to socialize and thank providers for their outstanding care.
Johnson Memorial Hospital physicians met with Springfield Market leaders and enjoyed breakfast both at the hospital and at the Karen Davis Krzynowek Cancer Center in Enfield, also on April 2. Mercy Medical Center rounded out the celebrations with a luncheon for physicians and advanced practice providers in the Deliso Conference Center.
The tradition of Doctors’ Day dates back to 1933 in Winder, Georgia, where Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of a physician, sought to recognize the dedication of doctors. She marked the occasion by mailing greeting cards to physicians and placing flowers on the graves of those who had passed. The date she chose, March 30, honored the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery. Over the years, this heartfelt gesture grew into a nationwide observance, officially recognized in 1990 when President George H.W. Bush signed legislation establishing March 30 as National Doctors’ Day.
