Saint Mary’s celebrated the arrival of Waterbury’s first baby of 2025 on New Year’s Day. Little Liv was born at 8:56 a.m. to Maitumelo Matale. Weighing in at 5 pounds, 6 ounces, Liv was originally going to be named Olivia, but her parents opted for the shorter version to make the name uniquely hers. Liv is the couple’s first child.

Little Liv came into the world on January 1, 2025, at 8:56 a.m.

Matale is a native of Botswana and came to the U.S. after meeting and marrying her husband while he was traveling there several years ago. She has a degree in social sciences and plans to start nursing school later this year.

Not only is Liv the first New Year’s baby in Waterbury, but she also holds the title for all of the Northwest corner of Connecticut. There were two other babies born on New Year’s Day at Saint Mary’s.
