Laki Rousou, M.D., is being honored as a Healthcare Hero by Healthcare News for his remarkable career achievements that make him a tremendous asset to the local community.  Dr. Rousou serves as Mercy Medical Center’s Chief of Thoracic Surgery, Chief of Robotic Surgery, and Medical Director of the Lung Cancer Screening Program.

Mercy's Dr. Laki Rousou with the new da Vinci Xi surgical system.

With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Rousou is a board-certified thoracic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery techniques – from lung resections to hernia repairs to esophagectomies. In addition to his important clinical leadership roles at Mercy, Dr. Rousou recently completed his 1000th da Vinci robotic thoracic surgery using the da Vinci Xi® surgical system. This achievement not only places Dr. Rousou among the nation’s most frequent users of the da Vinci surgical system for thoracic surgery, but he has also completed the most da Vinci thoracic surgeries in all of Trinity Health. Additionally, Dr. Rousou was instrumental in championing efforts for Mercy to acquire the new da Vinci Xi® surgical system earlier this year.

Dr. Rousou is deeply committed to his patients. He not only keeps current on the latest developments regarding technological advances and best practices in patient care so that his patients have the best chance of a positive outcome, his “bedside” manner is second to none. It’s not unusual to find him taking extra time to make sure his patients and their families fully understand the care plan or calling a patient after office hours to answer their questions or allay their fears.  In fact, if Dr. Rousou encounters a patient who calls frequently with questions and seems uneasy, he’ll invite them to come into the office so he can sit and talk with them, proactively helping them to navigate their situation.
